You don't want to be one of those caught in a puppy marketing scam, by calling them "Imperials", "Tea Cup", "Tiny", or Miniature Shih Tzu".

They have re-named Shih Tzu to attract buyers! Many on the web ads hardly resemble a good Shih Tzu, most have lost the beautiful big round heads and big round eyes, that they are known for. They should also have beautiful flowing coats.

 I see so many with narrow long down turned noses (should be level & with wide noses), they should have very dark almost black eyes, the skin around the eyes, nose, and lips completely black, absolutely no pink skin!  That one drives me nuts!!  I see them now with faded skin almost gray or very pale.  Then the aweful thin fluffy hard to keep coats, that don't even grow or resemble the smooth flowing proper coat of a Shih Tzu.

As for the so called "Imperial Breed of Shih Tzu"  Show me the Stud Book of Record!  The head club that started that new name (in the Bay Area) has yet to come forward with a 50 year stud book to back their claims!!!  Hmmm! but a beautiful new name to call  Shih Tzu!  That may hardly really look like the AKC Shih Tzu. This only hurts the breed that had a really hard time coming back after years of hard dedicated work, and after saving them in the early 1900's from Asia.   Go to the AKC offical website for Shih Tzu http://www.americanshihtzuclub.org/ and read what they have about this issue.  Buy a great book the "The Offical Shih Tzu Book" by Jo Ann White,  this is promoted by the AKC Shih Tzu parent club, a new version will be out in 2012. I know Jo Ann,  she is very involved with the breed and stays up on every issue concerning them.

 

Be patient, do your homework, don't get your sweet Shih Tzu puppy on a last minute impulse!  Make sure your next life long companion is going to come from quality healthy parents.  I hear over and over...we rescued / answered an ad / went on the web and got the most sweet dog, but...we spent $$$$ on his his health issues, or he didn't look at all like the picture showed. Many times they are aweful example of what a quality Shih Tzu or barely even resemble a Shih Tzu puppy based on the AKC standard.
